Best 15 things to do in Mendota, California

Mendota of California is about two hours from San Jose and forty minutes from Fresno. This city is all about Mexican flavors. When I visited Mendota, I got greeted by Mexican food all over the town. Starting from bars to grills, you can find everything with a Mexican twist. Even though there are only a few parks to visit, this city will amaze you with its food.

One thing that I did in Mendota is to visit all the restaurants and coffee shops. A lot of these places in Mendota are run by families, and they provide authentic Mexican dishes. Here is a list of things you can do in Mendota, California. Let’s begin, shall we,

city of medota california

1.Cabanas restaurant

cabanas restaurent mendota california

Cabanas restaurant is next to the fastrip convenience store in san Benito avenue. If you are looking for Salvadoran food, you have to visit this restaurant. I significant portions, and the price is also reasonable. The menu has so many soups.

My favorite dish out of their menu is the pupusas; I loved them a lot. Cabanas restaurant has one of the best services in Mendota city. You have to check out calabasitas and Asada tacos. In the case of cocktails, you will love their shrimp cocktail. The most recommended food is the gorditas.

You can have lunch and dinner here at about $20 to $30 per person. Cabanas restaurant is one of the restaurants in Mendota that I will visit again. The place might seem like its rundown but, the food is the real deal here. You will not regret getting lunch in this restaurant.

antojitos guanacos mendota california

You can find Antojitos guanacos is located at the junction of Mendota city next to burger king. If you are all about Salvadorean food, this is the next restaurant to visit. I had my breakfast in this restaurant, and they blew my taste buds into a new realm. If I stayed in Mendota longer, I would get my breakfast daily from antojitos guanacos.

One of the things to note about antojitos is the service they provide; they are very polite and even offer you extra napkins for meals that are hard to eat without spilling. I ate fajitas de polio, and I have to say it’s the best fajitas I have had in a long time.

I dint expected from antojitos that it would be a clean place that provides incredible enchiladas, but they did. The price might be an issue for some as it costs a little more than other restaurants in town.

3.Rojas pierce park

roja pierce park

The Rojas pierce park is something that you cannot miss if you are going through Mendota. One of my favorite things to do in Mendota is to go on walks around Rojas pierce park. It’s the best place to be in the mornings and evenings. During afternoons, as there are more miniature trees, you cant expect shade for picnics.

The biggest positives about Rojas pierce park are that it’s spotless and not run over by homeless people like other cities. Also, it’s a great place to bring your kids to play. There is a basketball court as well in Rojas pierce park.

The park is an all-in-one play area for kids as it has a skate park, basketball court, baseball court, and general play area in one place. The locals told me that the park was upgraded recently, and it’s looking excellent.

4.Tacos compa frank 2

tacos compa frank 2

Tacos compa frank 2 is the restaurant that surprised me the most. Being in a Mexican-flavored city with the word tacos on the restaurant name, I expected it to have Mexican food. Still, they took everything to another level by serving me sushi on the menu. Let’s say I wasn’t expecting that!

As soon as you walk by the place, you will be greeted by the fantastic smell of sushi and tacos. Tacos compa frank 2 is one Mendota place where authentic Mexican food is mixed with other cultural foods.

When I visited the place, the owner, Frank, greeted me; it made the experience incredible. The fruits and vegetables used are fresh, and the portions in the plating were good as well.

I ate the deep-fried burrito, and it became my favorite. I will highly recommend the sushi, and you have to try that. If you look at the place from outside, you wouldn’t say how lovely the owner or the food is.

5.Star burger

star burger mendota california

Star burger is located near antojitos guanacos. If you are not interested in the Mexican flavors of Mendota, then you can visit this burger joint for meals. It’s not a franchise burger joint, but it has a dine-in facility and a drive-through facility.

There are plenty of burger options to choose from, and they also have vegetarian versions. Since it’s a small burger joint, star burger might take some time to prepare the food. However, the taste usually makes up for the late food.

I had a hamburger from star burger along with banana splits. I was also told to try the pastrami sandwich, which was the best I have had in a while. The service has to be mentioned, the people that work there always have a broad smile, which I greatly appreciate.

If you are all about the old-school dine-in experience, this is the spot to visit in Mendota city. They also offer a variety of shakes.

6.Pupusería El Salvadoreño

pupuseria el salvadoreno

Pupuseria el salvadoreno is located on oller street road next to fastrip. The city of Mendota has many salvadoreno restaurants, but each has its twist to the dishes. So you won’t feel like you are entering the same restaurant or even eating the same flavored food. One of the signature dishes of Pupuseria el salvadoreno is the fried plantains.

I ordered my food and within ten minutes received the call that my food was ready. I talked to a local who passed by, and she told me this restaurant has the best pupuseria.

Some dishes that you should try here are the pollo azado, Carne Azada, and platanos fritos. You can either dine-in or do take away the food once you order. The place smelled nice, and the staff was welcoming. Sometimes Salvadorean foods get oily, but this place has the best balance to it. For first-timers to Salvadorean food, I would recommend this place.

7.Restaurante de María

restaurante de maria mendota california

If you are all about authentic Mexican food, then restaurante de maria is your choice. Although I visited this place in the afternoon, you can see this place anytime during the day. They have a wide range of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. An important note to remember is that most of the food served here is homemade, making them extra special.

This restaurant is located at the end of oller street. Sometimes it might be a little hard to find, and you can use the google maps link below for that. You have the 76 gas station nearby as well. This small business is run by a family, which is why I had to visit this place. The most beautiful thing about this restaurant is that even though the foods are tasty, they charge very little for them. The service was also top-notch.

I had the double bacon cheeseburger and the chilaquiles. Both were made fresh, and I loved them so much. My recommendation would be the tortillas, and the locals love them.

morenita pupuseria mendota

Morenita is located next to Mendota food center. I visited this place for breakfast, and they didn’t disappoint me. Morenita has the best tacos in town. Even though it’s a small place, you can expect good served with love. The site is clean, and the service was friendly. The outdoor dining facility is something that I liked in morenita.

I would still recommend you to try the pupusas; morenita has a twist to it. When it comes to Mendota city, keep in mind that you will find many Salvadorean food restaurants. They all might have the same dishes, but the taste is different.

Out of all the restaurants in Mendota, if you are looking for quick service, morenita is the restaurant of choice.

9.Veterans park

veterans park

You can find the veterans park in Mendota city near Divisadero street. You can chill in this park during the evening. This park is an excellent place for a picnic and bbq as well. I brought my take-out from tacos compa 2 and settled here for the evening.

It’s a clean park to spend your time in. You can also go for walks around the park in the morning. Generally, it’s not crowded, but sometimes you might find a lot of people here.

Don’t visit this park during afternoons as they don’t have many trees in the park. Even though this place needs to be landscaped, it’s a great place to spend your time. You can find a basketball court and some swings for the kids to play with.

The google pictures you might find in google will be misleading, and there are no rivers or beaches nearby for fishing.

10.Jess gill park

jess gill park mendota california

You can find jess gill park in derrick avenue. It has excellent parking areas so you can leave your kids to play during the weekends. I went on a morning walk around jess gill park, and it’s a great park with a good community around it. The park has three basketball courts and an excellent track for running as well. On the east side of the park, you can find a baseball field.

Even though this park doesn’t have many trees, it’s a great place to relax during the evenings. You can find picnic tables and benches around the park, which will make your life easier to monitor your kids in the park.

Most community parks are usually not maintained, but jess gill park is clean and pleasant for anyone to run or spend time in the evenings. However, you cannot consider this park a grilling or picnic park as it’s mostly a playground for kids, and most of the space is occupied by equipment and sports fields.

You have extensive parking to enjoy your donuts. They open very early in the morning, even if you don’t like to eat sweets in the morning, you should give them a try.

Unlike other places in Mendota, this place is always busy. The hot chocolate is a must-have. The best way to get fresh donuts is to come as early as possible. They sell out pretty fast as well. A lot of people from nearby towns visit this place to get donuts. On most days, they run out of donuts at 9 am, so you better be early.

The owners are super friendly, which always is a plus for me as I travel from place to place.

This is a light snack place where you can get carnitas and tacos in Asada. They also have the best beans that go well with any snack you get.

14.Di Amici Coffee Shop

de amici shop mendota california

Di amici coffee shop is located at the junction of 7th street and Unida street. It’s also next to the agua mart. I visited them on the last day of my stay in Mendota city; I wished I should have visited them on the first day. The food is top-notch; there is no arguing about that at all. However, a lot of people have problems with their portion size and the price.

The wild berry blend is my favorite drink out of the three drinks that I tried here. Always ask if they have the meat breakfast burrito; it’s delicious. If I’m ever going to come back again to Mendota, I will be visiting di amici for sure. Btw, I loved the muffin.

The staff individually will ask you about your coffee preference, which makes the experience even sweeter.
