Fresno Tower district: Top 10 Things to know!

Fresno is home to the Tower District. The Tower District is an area in Downtown Fresno that has been revitalized with new housing, retail, and restaurants. It also has a lot of history, which you can find at the Old Courthouse Museum or attending one of many events hosted in this historic district.  If you plan to visit Fresno or if you live here, take a look at our list of the top ten things to know about the Tower District.

Fresno County is home to many agricultural businesses and its largest employer, agriculture. The nearby Sierra National Forest provides recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. Fresno has various museums, including art galleries, an air museum, botanical gardens, a  science center, and more!

The Tower District was initially developed as Fresno’s central shopping district during the 1920s to serve customers of the local agricultural industry. It was then revived in the 1980s after years of decay by the new private development that included restaurants, bars, and other nightlife. Now home to over 100 retail shops and 32 eateries within a two-block radius, you can find a wide variety of retail shops and restaurants.

  • The Tower Theatre is a beautiful single-screen movie theater with big-name movies as well as some independent films. It’s also one of the last remaining examples of Art Deco design from the 1930s. So if you are looking for something new to watch or want to experience a piece of history, check out a movie at Fresno’s Tower Theatre!
  • The Fresno Art Museum hosts national traveling art exhibits and provides educational resources and workshops within their facility. You can also take an art class or tour this two-story museum during regular Thursdays through Sundays!
  • The Chaffee Zoo is located in Roeding, right next door to the famous Forestiere Underground Gardens. The zoo is home to over 350 animals representing nearly 150 mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. It’s also home to many different conservation programs, including the Central California Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.
  • The Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra performs at the Gallo Center for Performing Arts, which has state-of-the-art technology and acoustics, so you can get the best experience possible! This year alone, they will perform 44 classical music concerts as well as 16 children’s concerts. This wonderful non-profit organization was established in 1953 and hosts various events such as workshops for those interested in instrument petting or wanting to brush up on their skills!
  • Fresno is known as the “Gateway to Yosemite” for its easy access to many outdoor activities. Fresno is also home to the historic Madera Ranchos, which you might recognize from the Gold Rush-era television show Bonanza!
  • Sports are prevalent in Fresno, and you can catch various games throughout the city, including soccer, baseball, and basketball. Chukchansi Park is a great place to see a baseball game while enjoying food from local vendors and listening to some great music before or after the game!
  • Several events take place in Fresno’s Tower District throughout the year. From art walks on First Fridays to farmers markets every Saturday, there is always something going on here! One of our favorite events each summer is The Tower Jazz Festival hosted in this district during August.
  • Fresno is home to many great neighborhoods with different styles and price ranges. Although prices in Fresno are much lower than in other California locations, you may find that Fresno offers more value for your money when it comes to purchasing a new home or renting an apartment!
  • The Tower District was established over 100 years ago as Fresno’s central shopping district. Now, you can find a variety of retail stores within walking distance from one another, along with some great places to eat! So whether you’re looking for something new to wear, a gift for a loved one, or want some delicious food at reasonable prices, be sure to check out Fresno’s Tower District next time you’re in town!
  • Another great place to visit when in Fresno is Roeding Park. Located in the heart of this city, you can find all sorts of wildlife and outdoor activities here at this beautiful 283-acre park! With over 10 miles of trails for hiking or biking, fishing ponds, soccer fields, and even a model airplane field, Roeding Park has it all!
  • Fresno also has many family-friendly events throughout the year, including festivals specifically for children! One event that takes place every April is the annual Children’s Festival. This free festival hosts 1000s of kids each year with live entertainment, workshops, crafts, and much more. The best part is that it’s FREE – take along some canned food if you would like to help out your local community by donating to the California Rescue Mission!
  • You can find Fresno State University just off of Highway 41 or Clinton Avenue. This campus is home to over 20,000 students offering bachelor’s degrees and master’s, credential, and certificate programs! There are also many sports activities available to participate in at this university, including basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and even cheerleading.
  • Fresno City College offers associate degrees and career training classes for those interested in pursuing a degree later down the road. Some programs offered include nursing, education, and much more!
  • Sundays in Fresno also offer another great activity, Broadway Plaza Shopping Center’s, Farmers Market. Every Saturday and Sunday from 9 am until 3 pm, and this outdoor market has everything from fresh fruits & vegetables to baked goods. Plus, live music is played throughout each day when you visit, so be sure to come ready to dance!
  • Although you may not be familiar with Fresno, this city has so much to offer, and we encourage you to see it all for yourself!
